Stress, Addiction, and Acupuncture

Work in progress 11/19/2016

Need Addiction Help? First seek professional treatment, counseling, and rehab. You can call the hotline here:
Drug Abuse Hotline
Suicidal? Call the National Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.

Acupuncture makes a great adjunct to professional rehabilitative treatment and detox plan. Find a acupuncturist here: My personal friends or Nation wide database

Some basic facts:

Stress
img_4487
At the acupuncture school they say that stress first attacks the Lungs and Weiqi “Defensive Qi” or in the west, the respiratory system and Immune system of the body. Lungs in Chinese medicine touches the outside world, and is first organ vulnerable to external pathogens like wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, allergens, and viruses.

My first TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctor Amy says The number #1 cause of health issues is stress, and it is important to reduce it. There are several ways she says we can reduce stress:
1. Diet: a diet low in salt, low in fat, low in sugar, good carbohydrates, protein, and anti-oxidants.
2. Acupuncture: acupuncture to open blocked channels from the stress and dis-ease.
3. Nutrition and herbs: these repair the channels.
4. Healthy Lifestyle: exercise, including meditation, Qigong, Taijiquan (Tai chi), proper sleep, good bowel movement, etc.
PicsArt_1417451416423
Amy says to maintain your roads (acupuncture channels), reduce the stress that damage them. She compares disease as to a avalanche that blocks the road. Diseases like ulcers, cancer, and others affect different people in different ways. Certain types of food are more suitable to different body types.
So in order to help the different issues, a person needs to identify their body type and avoid certain foods.

Marijuana
As of 11/19/2016 the movement is growing to legalize marijuana. In California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Colorado, Washington D.C., Nevada, and Maine, it is recreational. It is legal for medical use in 17 other states. Its uses should be cautioned. It is our view that taking one herb in excess continually builds toxins. It can create many unwanted symptoms and can make you lethargic. Please consult a herbalist on how to use other herbs to balance the side-effects if you decide to use for recreation. There is a fine line between use and abuse. Example product “Balance the Herbs”. for instance was designed for users of marijuana to counter the withdrawal symptoms of marijuana. Chinese formulas like Bu fei Tang can help tonify the lungs from the drying effect smoke does to the lungs, and Gui Pi Tang, a spleen formula can help the spleen and blood. Many folks who have Liver Yang feel relaxed from marijuana as they are highly productive, use movement, and action. Something like Xiao Yao San, or Liver formula can be used for stress and smooth out Qi stagnation in those with Liver Yang. Talk to a Chinese herbalist about it.

5 Elements songs!

$

My choices of music if you are going through a particular emotional stress and need some attitude adjustment. These are my personal picks for songs, but hopefully you get the idea, and can find songs that soothe your soul and help you find emotional and mental balance.

5-element-emotion

psyche

Earth: the organ here is Stomach and Spleen. the positive emotion is feeling “centered” which is where you can be at your upmost intelligence. The negative is Worry! No better song for worry is Bob Marley’s “Don’t worry about a thing”!

Bobby McFerrin’s song “Don’t Worry Be happy” comes in second place.

Music that is supposed to improve intelligence, IQ, memory, and concentration.

Metal Element: Organ is the Lungs and Large Intestines. The positive aspect of the Joy while the negative emotion is sadness and grief. Excess joy and pleasure can be a imbalance as well. Songs I choose for this element are:

For Sadness: Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World”

A good song for Joy is Steve Windham’s “Finer things”:

Water Element. Water dominates the Kidneys and Urinary bladder. When strong we have courage, but when weak, we are prone to fear.

A great song for courage is Queen’s “We are the Champions!”

Fear, we all fear death, a song I think is good for fear is Blue Oyster Cult’s “The Reaper” in the lyrics he says: “Seasons do not fear the reaper, nor the wind, sun, and rain!”

Wood Element. Wood organs are the Liver and Gall Bladder. The negative aspect is Anger, while Kindness is a expression of a healthy Liver and Gall Bladder.

Songs for when angry: Craig David’s “I’m walking away” this is a good song to step out of a situation and contemplate.

Songs for Kindness: “Try a little kindness” from Glen Campbell:

Fire Element:
Organs: heart and small intestines. All emotions affect the heart! Patience is the positive and Cruelty, is the action of anger, which is the negative.

Need patience? Here is some Gun’s and Roses, “Patience”

been cruel to others? try some Elvis! Don’t be Cruel to a hearts that true!

Hope you enjoyed.

Structure and 3 Dan tien: alignments for Taijiquan training from a TCM perspective

$
0
0

Some Mindfulness for structural alignment based on some TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) concepts and Tai Chi Classics:
The ideas come from 3 Dan Tien, , simple body alignments, and upright spine and what to do to achieve this in Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan).

ren-mai-characterv2

8-gua-channels

yin-yang-tai-shao-jue-mingv2

On structural imbalances: 3 dan tien: are located in the head, chest, and hips.

1. Upper dan tien: YinTang between eyebrows as a spiritual center.
2. Middle dan tien: between nipples: Mind and emotional center.
3. Lower Dan tien: True center, center of gravity below umbilicus.

wu-ji-taiji_man1

Tai Chi Classics for body alignment:
1. Sink the chest,
2. Sink the qi to dan tien,
3. Move with the Qi sticking to the back and permeating the spine.

“Stand like a balanced scale and rotate actively like a wheel.”
1. Hips level: non-forcefully lengthening lower back, slight tilt of hip and tailbone.
2. Shoulders level- slight roundness of back, sink of chest.
3. Head suspended: shoulders down, head lifts up.
These Complete the scale.

Align these to help the yin (Ren mai) and yang (du mai) energies of the body balance like a scale at: Neck ST 9, SP15- lateral to navel, KD11 pubic bone of hip.
They are some reference points that assist with body structure and opening Du and Ren mai:
Hip Alignment: Pubic bone point KD11 and SP15 above at the anterior ASIS (Anterior Superior Iliac spine) in the Front with the sacrum and mingmen Du4 on the back.
Neck Region alignment: ST9, SCM (Sternocleidoidmastoid muscle) muscle on the anterior side in the front aligns with Du 16 at the EOP (External occipital protuberance) on the back of neck.
ren-du_master

Some Taijiquan masters with education in TCM will discuss the importance of opening the the Ren and Du mai vessels to correct structural issues.
It is said to do this by: Connect with the Ren mai, by way of the Du mai beginning at the Hui Yin point CV1 at the perineum. It is located between the sex organ and the anus. It connects with GV1 at the tip of the coccyx. It is important that the qi reaches to the top of head, when this occurs it can move down. It has to pass the difficult ‘locks’ at the shoulders and neck to reach the top. By following the principles of Taijiquan body requirements this should naturally open without forcing to much effort.

taiji-pole

On the Upright body:
Taiji Lun: “Do not lean in any direction” Insights to the 13 postures (Wang Tsung-Yu): “Body must me upright and stable, comfortable to support force from 8 directions.”

spine-elongate

Ming men- space between kidneys.
Chapter 8 of the Han Dynasty TCM classic: Nanjing mentioned, “Space between kidneys that pulsates.”
This is probably one of the most important points for health and commonly activated in qigong and Taijiquan.

miister-fire-gate-of-life

CV3/CV4- Lower Dan tien is considered an area for longevity, bones, blood, and sexuality/libido.

1. “Sink Qi to the tan tien” phrase in TCC to accumulate Qi there, it is the first martial art to address this location. In TCM it is thought to tonify kidneys and adrenals, strengthen immune system, fortifies bones and sexual organs.

2. Rotation of body: should originate from this dan tien center.

3. Weight shifting: is initiated from this center.

On the Inner Exercise of TCC (Tai chi Chuan): in TCM, Qi has excess or deficiency imbalances. When this imbalance happens, Qi gets stuck or blocked and eventually leads to disease. TCC is used to circulate blood and qi, and when this circulation improves the mind relaxes more. The homeostasis that heals the body can then begin to repair imbalances.

Mentality in Taijiquan: Is one of softness, gentleness, yielding, acceptance.
You yield to force and place self in advantageous situations. Find strength in softness. Competition, success, and power are let go of. Life is full of uncontrollable situations. Trying to control and be perfect creates undue stress. Trying to achieve influence only brings disappointment, and bad health. Releasing muscular tension is important so that we can use feeling to seek out tension. Even when standing , we try to release tight muscles in our thighs.

Conclusion: Martial Art harmonized with Wai gong (External skill) and Neigong (Internal skill).
With diligent practice and perseverance, we believe that the original intent of practicing the solo forms of Taijiquan, you should have a balance of unified external: addressing opponent (martial art) with focus on your external structure, combined with inner awareness of bone structure with relaxation. The Tai Chi classics are the key to obtaining this as previously mentioned. While some channels, vessels, and points are mentioned, they should not be the areas of focused intent, but rather assistants to points of reference for proper structure.

Face Reading in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Face Diagnosis or Mien Shung is looking at the face as a method of diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this method a practitioner can quickly observe the color, shape, and features that may indicate an imbalance or trait.
Various markings have a predisposition to an illness. They can indicate strengths and weaknesses of body, mind, and spirit.

5 elements

This diagnosis stems for the 5 element theory.

5-elements

Let’s have a look at the 5 elements in this diagnosis process:

In oriental medicine, there are no “bad” elements. Everything is a gift and challenge.

Wood personality for instance: Anger is the challenge, but this kind of person actually has a lot of passion. Wood types are very focused, athletic, direct, competitive. suppressing their anger, also suppresses their passion. They are often enforcers of the truth.

Face: Wood types have a long rectangular face, long body like a tree, think of like a basketball player, strong jaw, threatening eyes. Determined.

wood

Fire personality: Typically they say “Joy” is the challenge in TCM for this type of person, but what they really mean is excess joy, excess pleasure, to a point of even mania. The gift is the ability to disperse or dissipate. These are the type of people who love fun.

Face: oval shape, sparkly eyes, have slender body, points at eyebrows, nose, lips.

fire

Earth personality: their challenge is one of worry. They have strong empathy for others. They are the ones who “feel”. You would want to ask them how they “feel” about something. They are very in touch with their feelings, and the feelings of others.

Face: square, they have short legs, thighs, and butt.

earth

Metal personality: Their challenge is often grief, while the they carry the gift of sympathy. Metal types are practical, logical, mathematical, and often will use “I think” when asked about a opinion about something.

Face: Round, angular, high cheek bones, long slender nose, delicate, pale skin.

metal

Water personality: are ruled by fear and often look around suspiciously. They typically have the ‘what if’ going on in their minds, but they have a gift of wisdom. These types are very sensual, dreamy, flowing, imaginative/creative people.

Face: cheeky, dreamy eyes, sensual body.

Pediatric Tui-Na Massage for Infants and Children

This is some notes I’ve gathered from school along with our text book and other special books of Traditional Chinese Medicine and helping infants. This is a very special topic as I have a infant son and find myself using massage as a useful mode to relieve problems. Acupuncture is not recommended for infants until the age of 5. the view is that the internal organs and elements of the body have not settles and are moving and active. Though I have also seen direct moxa and quick needling acupuncture used before. Most cases are for emergency as well like prick-bleeding Erjian on the ear to relieve fever.

Many of these points I was aware of from years as a massage therapist. Some are points specific children.

Infant Massage session should take 20 minutes to complete. While the method is called Tui-na (push and grasp), the actual way of doing the massage is more An-Mo in nature since it uses a more press/rubbing method.

Constitutional Acupuncture

*from Clinic Internship Spring 2017 Virginia University of Oriental Medicine (VUOM) Dr. Pyo supervisor.

More to come, stay tuned. last update 4/27/2017

/Constitutional acupuncture is not well known in the west but it is taking a hold in our clinic here at VUOM. From what I have gathered, some unique testing is done to determine the dominant element of the person and constitution type. There are 4 elements are used in Constitutional acupuncture, a person’s body type has a primary with a secondary element.

It is a complicated system of using many points in the tonify and sedate directions. In some cases it forces you to rely on a partner to do the testing. The charts at the bottom of this blog are required to get the pattern to do on a person. In other words, it is pretty impossible to memorize them all compared to something like 4 Needle Saam method which shares similar 5 element Shu points. I guess this particular Constitutional acupuncture method can be called “16 needle acupuncture” depending if you do the 5 shu point or 8 extraordinary point set.

5 element Shu points and Saam Tonify/Sedate points. Not shown the Saam Heating and Cooling points.

What I do like about this method is it uses nature and what seems like quantum physics in its theory. The method is thought to work on all cases the patient is having in regards to physical issues, their energy level, mental health, and spiritual wellness. A good patient for this method is one with issues in a lot of places. My teacher calls this method an art form. It seems very mathematical as well.

Bio-Digital O-Ring test (BDORT)

Most of the testing is done with what is called “ring testing” where the patient holds the thumb and middle finger together, places the other middle finger on parts of the pictures the patient is asked to touch.
It is actually a patented technique introduced by Japanese acupuncturist Dr. Yoshiaki Omura called “Bio-Digital O-Ring Test” (BDORT):

The BDORT technique is controversial as western doctors will call it quackery and pseudo science. The real knowing is testing and playing around with it so you can make an educated decision. For myself as a formally licensed Massage therapist, there seems to be some traces of Reiki thought and method in Dr. Yoshiaki Omura’s BDORT method.

The doctor tries to pull them apart using his two middle fingers to feel strength or weakness. Strong grip and weak grips can be found in the patient. Why is this? what makes standing in a certain direction or touching certain parts of a picture cause strength and weakness of trying to keep fingers touching? Earth’s Magnetic energy fields, and gravitational forces apparently working on the individual. This is indication of what the patient needs or doesn’t need. BDORT can be done with food, vitamins, herbs, find allergens… things your body may need or not need. The body will tell you. This is how the doctor finds which image, element, cardinal direction, etc. is best for patient. Other testing also indicates clockwise/counter clockwise energy patterns of a patient.

Some of the Images the patient will touch: (not shown: spiral galaxy clockwise and counter-clock wise)

Lost yet? Sound a bit too mystical or farfetched?

So here is something pretty cool: this “ring technique” works for needling direction. A assistant to the doctor is used when the doctor places a chop stick or needling tube in the direction or opposite direction of channel. For Extraordinary points the doctor does the “ring test” towards the front or back of patient. The reason for this is the Channels go up or down the body, while the extraordinary energy spirals left and right around the body. So if the doctor has a hard time pulling the ring apart for instance in the counter direction for ST36 on right side, then he will use sedation direction on rt. Side and tonification direction on left side and confirm this with the ring test on left side.

Image: 12 channel energy running up and downward, 8 Extraordinary energy spiraling.

Time of day, direction, so much to know. Direction a patient is needled is also changed based on the direction they were needled last time. Some people are clockwise energy, others are counterclockwise wise. There is a lot to know at this point as I am still trying to figure out this method, but am fascinated on the ring testing as it seems to be real and not fake.

In the future a book will be translated/written by my intern teacher Dr. Pyo, but his brother who is a Western medical doctor, qigong master, and acupuncturist devised this method based on the 5 element “shu points” and extraordinary points using theory of polarity, the universe, nature, and earth.

Basically:

Time of Day Chart: These show Moon times, if it is not Moon time, use Sun time.

Charts on the set to be done on the patient based on Constitution test results.
*Find Bai Hui and place a needle two centimeters behind Bai Hui. This is a good start to the needling for some needle direction testing as well.

work in progress (need to add more herb pictures). commentary on the points and herbs of Taoist Ma Dang Yang.

More details that explains the Taoist tradition of Ma Dang Yang please go here:
MA DANYANG’S TWELVE ACUPOINTS Valuable Points for Acupuncturists to Know and Use by Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D.

What I like about this system, it is very similar in point selections that my first acupuncturist Amy used. Of course she used many more, but this system is a good start and great base to work off of. You have a foundation of points, herbs, and formulas. Ma Dang Yang seems to understand the importance of jing “essence” cultivation and preservation, especially into old age as we pass various growth and decline in our age. In Men it is every 8 year cycle, in women it is every 7 years.

Some extra Herbs are added as well, some very common in many formulas. Ma Dang Yang was big on controlling sweating as to not lose excess fluids which can damage blood. Be aware that nowadays sweating is actually not a “bad” thing, as it is associated with moving water and releasing the exterior, for example a sauna or exercise have health benefits. Times are different now with controlled environments with the invention of air conditioning. People with sedentary lifestyle like office workers, need to exercise more from sitting for many hours.

Push Hands- some basic patterns.

All these guys have won championships in one way or another . I’ve competed but usually got second place. I test some of my pushing with them. Though I took a lot of pushes, I’m seeing some of the things that worked for me. Many teachers will not put themselves out there in free pushing against a high level person. They will lose face. They tend to show only beating their students and other silly demos not under pressure and many are suspect. No showboating here, just testing under duress.
